It's an old, slow dinosaur and its features are definitively not streamlined in any way. Performance, in general, seems to be way worse nowadays than for example Max2009. I love a lot about 3dsMax and I want to see it gain traction and keep being a main contender for 3D work, but I keep being disappointed about the direction and features. But the last 6 months I've been going over to Houdini. Two years ago I started specializing in VFX. I cannot talk for the VFX industry as a whole, but in arch viz, oil and gas, engineering etc. Its getting harder and harder to find a job in Movie industry using 3ds max.ģdsMax user since 2002 here. ![]() I feel like my career is on an edge to be over. I personally cannot stand Houdini but I keep myself forcing to learn it and eventually will need to switch. As 3ds max has missing features that Houdini has. I see everyone keeps saying "3ds max is dead" and as I cannot get a job anymore as 3ds max artist I keep asking myself so is 3ds max really dead? Last year I keep searching for jobs in movie industry and everyone I ask says no I don't use 3ds max anymore I use Houdini now, max is dead. ![]() 3ds Max still feels like lagging behind all other apps, with features. ![]() Today after 20 years of working in games and movies, Autodesk put itself on pedestal with it's flagship application 3ds max. I remember using the version 3 on windows NT with crashing constantly but I could do my first 3d stuff and I fall in love. I remember first time when I started using 3ds max was almost 20 years ago It was an outsider 3d application because although everyone loved Maya nobody seams to have liked 3ds max.
